AI Can Answer Every Facebook Messenger Chat for You
Most Facebook Pages answer Messenger the same way: someone checks the Page inbox when they remember to, and the messages that arrived overnight get a reply the next morning, if at all. Connecting the Page to an AI assistant changes the timing rather than the channel. Customers keep messaging the Page exactly as before, and the assistant answers from your own business information within seconds.
The connection itself is one trip through Facebook and back. What follows is that trip, plus the part people ask about afterwards: how to step in and answer a customer yourself without the assistant talking over you.
What do you need before you start?
- A Facebook Business Page. A personal profile cannot receive Messenger conversations through the API, so if the business currently runs on a personal account, the Page has to exist first.
- A Facebook account that administers that Page. Facebook only lists Pages you have the role to act on, so a colleague's login shows you their Pages and not yours.
- A desktop or laptop. The connect dialog is switched off on small screens, because Facebook's login popup does not survive a mobile browser reliably. This is the one that catches people out, so do it at a computer.
How do you connect it, step by step?
In the dashboard
Open Messaging Channels, find Facebook Messenger and click Activate. A dialog headed Connect Facebook Messenger opens with a single button on it.
In the Facebook window
Click Continue with Facebook and sign in if you are not signed in already. Facebook asks for three permissions, and it is worth knowing what each one is for rather than clicking past them: the right to list your Pages, the right to send and receive messages on the Page you pick, and the right to subscribe that Page to message notifications. Nothing in that set reaches your personal profile or your friends.
If you have connected this app to Facebook before for another channel, Facebook may show the permission screen again rather than reusing the old approval. That is deliberate on our side. An older approval will not contain the Messenger permissions, and re-asking is the only way to add them without sending you into Facebook's settings to revoke the app by hand.
Choosing the Page
Back in the dialog, your Pages appear as a list. Pick the one your customers message and click Connect Page. The status changes to Connected.
You confirm the Page even when you only have one. That is on purpose: connecting a Page starts an assistant answering real customers on it, which is worth one deliberate click rather than a step that happens while you are reading something else. If you run several Pages, this is also the moment to check you picked the trading name and not the dormant one from a rebrand.
How do you check it worked?
- From a different Facebook account, or a colleague's phone, send a message to the Page through Messenger. Your own account will not do, since a Page cannot message itself.
- Open the Inbox in the dashboard. The message should be sitting there.
- Check the reply arrived on Messenger, not just in the dashboard. The assistant answers from your knowledge base, so a thin answer here usually means a thin knowledge base rather than a broken connection.
If the answer was wrong rather than missing, that is a content problem with a different fix. What belongs in the knowledge base covers what to feed it, and why an assistant answers wrongly covers how to find the gap that caused it.
When you want to answer a customer yourself
Some conversations should not be automated: a complaint, a refund argument, a regular customer who would notice. Open the conversation and click Take over. The dashboard confirms that the assistant has stopped replying to that customer, and it stays stopped.
That last part matters more than it sounds. A takeover on Messenger does not expire on a timer. The assistant will not quietly start answering again halfway through your conversation, and it will not resume tomorrow either. When you are finished, click Resume AI on that conversation to hand it back. Until you do, that customer is yours, and every other conversation carries on being answered automatically.
What if it does not connect?
- No Pages in the list. You are signed in to Facebook as someone without a Page role. Sign out of Facebook, sign back in as the account that administers the Page, and start again.
- The dialog says the Facebook SDK will not load. An ad blocker or a privacy extension is blocking Facebook's script. Turn it off for this site for the length of the setup.
- The button is greyed out. You are on a phone or a narrow window. Widen the window or move to a computer.
- Nothing arrives in the inbox afterwards. The Page connected but the message subscription did not. Disconnect and reconnect, and accept all three permissions rather than deselecting one on the Facebook screen.
Messenger is rarely the only place customers write. If you are answering on more than one channel, a single inbox across every channel is what stops the same question being answered twice, and connecting a WhatsApp number works on the same principle as this one.
