AI Can Answer Your Instagram DMs Around the Clock
Instagram is where a lot of buying decisions actually happen, and the direct message box is where most of them stall. Someone asks the price at eleven at night, nobody is awake, and by morning they have asked a competitor the same question. Connecting the account to an AI assistant does not change how customers reach you. It changes how long they wait.
Setup takes about a minute, and there is one thing to get straight before you start, because it is the part people get wrong.
You will never be asked for your Instagram password
Connecting is done through Instagram Login, which is Meta's own sign-in. A window opens on Instagram's own domain, you approve the connection there, and Instagram hands back an authorization code. Your password is typed into Instagram and nowhere else. No dashboard, ours or anyone else's, receives it, transmits it, or stores it.
This is worth stating plainly because the opposite pattern is common and dangerous. If any tool ever presents you with a form asking for your Instagram username and password, close it. That is how accounts get taken over, and no legitimate integration needs it. What a legitimate one asks for is a set of named permissions on a Meta screen, which is what you will see here.
Which Instagram accounts can connect?
Three conditions, and all three have to hold. Most failed connections are one of these rather than a fault in the setup:
- The account is a Professional account, meaning Business or Creator. A personal Instagram account cannot receive messages through the API at all. Switching is free and takes a moment in Instagram's own settings.
- It is linked to a Facebook Page. Instagram messaging is authorised through that Page, which is why the Page has to exist even though you are connecting Instagram.
- You are an admin or moderator of that Page. Being the person who posts to the Instagram account is not the same permission, and this is the condition people are most often surprised by.
You also need a desktop or laptop. The connect dialog is switched off on small screens, because the sign-in popup does not survive a mobile browser reliably.
How do you connect it, step by step?
- Open Messaging Channels, find Instagram and click Activate. A dialog headed Connect Instagram opens.
- Click Continue with Instagram. A popup opens on Instagram. If nothing appears, your browser blocked it, so allow pop-ups for this site and click again.
- Approve the permissions. Four are requested: reading which Pages you can reach, creating the message subscription on the linked Page, reading the account's handle and picture, and sending and receiving its direct messages.
- Choose the account. The dialog asks which Instagram account your customers message, and lists each handle next to its Facebook Page so you can tell two similar accounts apart. If you only have one it is preselected, but you still confirm it.
- The status changes to Connected. Open Settings on the channel and check the handle listed is the one you meant.
What if no account appears?
The dialog will tell you which of the three conditions failed. Each message points at a different fix:
- No Professional account was found. The account is still personal, or it is not linked to a Facebook Page, or you did not select both during sign-in. That last one is the common case: the Meta screen lists your account and your Page as separate checkboxes and it is easy to tick only one.
- The account was found, but the Page was not shared. The account came through without access to its Facebook Page. Connect again and make sure the Page is selected on the Meta screen.
- You are not an admin or moderator of the Page. Nothing you can do from your own account will fix this. A Page admin either grants you the role or runs the connection themselves.
If you have connected this app to Meta before for another channel, you may be asked to approve permissions that look familiar. An older approval will not contain the Instagram permissions, and asking again is the only way to add them without sending you into Meta's settings to revoke the app by hand.
How do you check it worked?
- From a different Instagram account, send a DM to the connected account. Your own account will not do.
- Open the Inbox in the dashboard. The message should be there.
- Check the reply actually arrived on Instagram, not just in the dashboard. The assistant answers from your knowledge base, so a vague answer here points at the knowledge base rather than at the connection.
Taking a conversation over yourself
You do not have to leave the dashboard to answer someone personally, and you should not race the assistant to the reply. Open the conversation, click Take over, and the assistant stops replying to that customer. It stays stopped until you click Resume AI on that conversation, with no timer running in the background. Everyone else keeps getting answered automatically while you deal with the one that needs a person.
Worth knowing afterwards
Instagram is rarely the only inbox. Most businesses that connect it are already answering somewhere else, which is the argument for one inbox across every channel rather than four tabs. If you are weighing which channel deserves the attention first, WhatsApp against Instagram DM for support compares them on the things that matter to a small team.
